The smartphone leak season has officially begun. Almost everyday, we’re seeing new leaks of upcoming devices from the likes of Samsung, Huawei, and others. The most recent set of leaks belong to the upcoming Huawei P40 series.
Tipster Evan Blass has posted images of what looks like a premium variant of the P40 Pro. Another leakster RODENT950 has shared photos of three different camera arrays allegedly belonging to the Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and a premium Pro variant. Let’s dive into each of those leaks individually.
A ceramic Huawei P40 Pro with five rear cameras
The Huawei P40 Pro images leaked by Evan Blass show a smartphone with a penta camera setup at the back. Blass notes that the phone will have a ceramic finish just like the Galaxy S10 Plus.
He doesn’t specifically say this is a premium edition P40 Pro. However, just yesterday, we saw a leak of the Huawei P40 Pro with four rear cameras, suggesting Blass’ images belong to a third variant of the phone, which could be the top-of-the-line version.
Up close, the camera system in the new leak shows a Leica-branded lens. The technical details describe the lens as having an 18-240mm focal length. This probably refers to the rumored periscope lens on the phone which is expected to support 10x optical zoom.
Apart from the rear cameras, Blass’ leak also shows a curved display and dual selfie shooters on the phone, backing up previous renders.
More evidence for three variants
After Evan Blass’ leak, tipster RODENT950 shared pictures showing the difference in the camera setups of the three alleged Huawei P40 variants. He calls them P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro PE (Premium Edition).
However, he later confirmed that the name Huawei P40 Pro PE is just a placeholder until he can confirm what the device is actually called.

Nevertheless, the images posted by him show a triple camera setup (P40), a quad camera array (P40 Pro), and a penta camera configuration (P40 Pro PE).
52MP Sony sensor incoming?
A third leak from Chinese publication MyDrivers suggests that the Huawei P40 Pro will be equipped with a 52MP sensor. It is reportedly a custom Sony sensor 1/1.33-inch in size. The camera is said to apply two 4-in-1 Quad Bayer conversions to achieve a 16-in-1 pixel-binned shot. We’re not exactly sure how this would work, but it will reportedly improve night-time and low light photography.
Conclusion
What we gather from the above mentioned leaks is this. Firstly, there might be three variants of the Huawei P40. Secondly, they could all have different camera configurations. Lastly, there might be a custom 52MP Sony sensor, at least on the two Pro variants. However, as goes with all leaks, nothing is confirmed and things might be clearer closer to March when the devices are expected to launch.
