Taking place from May 7 to May 9, Google I/O 2019 less than two weeks away. To help attendees and viewers alike get ready for the developer conference, the Silicon Valley search giant is rolling out an update to its Android app to get it set for this year’s festivities (via 9to5Google).
The Google I/O 2019 app is primarily used for checking out the conference’s schedule. In addition to that, attendees can book seats for specific sessions. Up until now, users could only do this from the I/O 2019 website.

As expected, the updated app utilizes the Google Material Theme for than last year’s. Other than cosmetic changes, the Google I/O 2019 app includes new features. Below is a list of those changes from the Play Store:
- Add events to your personal calendar
- Explore I/O in Augmented Reality (onsite attendees only)
- Use the home page to view upcoming sessions, announcements, and more
- Search for sessions by topics and speakers
The most apparent addition is the augmented reality addition. Likely relying on Google’s ARCore technology, attendees will be able to interact with elements located at the developer conference.
We will have to wait until we’re in Mountain View to know precisely how AR will be used.
One feature that goes unmentioned in the app’s changelog is a new dark theme. You can see it in action below alongside screenshots of the rest of the app.
The app’s theme can be changed from the Settings menu. After tapping on “Choose theme,” users will be able to choose Light theme, Dark theme, or Battery saver. The last option will enable the I/O 2019 app’s dark theme when the phone’s battery saver feature is activated.
You can download the Google I/O 2019 app directly from the Play Store by clicking on the button below. iOS users will have to wait a bit longer as the update does not appear to have hit the App Store just yet.
