Huawei CEO slams Samsung Galaxy Fold design as ‘not good’ flash alert on call sms pro 2

The two most prevalent foldable devices recently revealed are the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X. Although both devices feature a foldable display, the designs are actually quite different.

In a recent interview with Business Insider, Huawei consumer CEO Richard Yu admits that, originally, his company was working on a design more like the Galaxy Fold. However, the company killed the idea when they realized it was “not good.”

“I feel having two screens, a front screen and a back screen, makes the phone too heavy,” Yu said, referencing the Samsung Galaxy Fold design. “We [Huawei] had several solutions, but we canceled them. We had three projects simultaneously. We had something even better than that [the Samsung Galaxy Fold], killed by me.”

“It was bad,” he added.

Editor's Pick

Huawei eventually settled on the design of the Mate X, which features a single display that folds out into a pseudo-tablet. From the looks of it, the Mate X does appear to be much slimmer than the Galaxy Fold. However, there are concerns about how the screen could be easily scratched since it is exposed at all times.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold has a single smartphone-style display on the outside and a flexible tablet-style display on the inside. This will protect the (presumably) more delicate foldable display when the tablet portion isn’t in use. However, the phone does seem thicker and the hinge mechanism isn’t totally flush, which might allow for dust and debris to get into the device, possibly damaging parts.

One thing the phones both have in common is the price: the Samsung Galaxy Fold will sell for nearly $2,000, while the Huawei Mate X will sell for $2,600.
