- Google quietly started selling its Clips camera through the Google Store.
- Those who got their orders in say Clips will not ship for at least another month.
- Clips uses machine learning to automatically shoots pictures and video loops.
It has been months since its unveiling, but the AI-powered Google Clips camera is now available for purchase. You will have to wait if you managed to snag one, however.
The good folks at Android Police were able to recently place an order for the little device. Even though free shipping was included, they have to wait until March 1 or March 2 to get their Clips. Meanwhile, Engadget saw delivery dates between February 27 and March 5.
It seems that, even if you got an order in, you will have to wait at least a month for Clips to arrive at your doorstep.
I say that because Google stopped taking orders for the device. Instead, potential customers can join a waitlist and will receive an email once Clips is available again.
Joining that waitlist is not all bad — it gives you time to think about whether you should get the device.
On one hand, Clips features an impressive amount of technology in a small body. Sporting a 12 MP sensor with a 130-degree field of view, Clips automatically shoots images and small video loops. They are then saved to your Google Images account, where you can tinker with the content and share them to other services.
Particularly of interest is the device’s machine learning capabilities. In a recent blog post, Google said it trained AI using photography experts to identify the best shots. Because of that, Clips should get smarter with its pictures and videos the more you use it.
On the other hand, the device’s $249 price tag seems a bit steep for what is being offered. Also, given Google’s long history of experimentation, we are not sure if the search giant will double down on Clips or forget about it.
Either way, let us know in the comments if you plan on picking up Clips at some point.
